KUNG-FU for beginner illustrators. Where is the nord? | 9 advices to start from somewhere

In my previous post of Kung fu for beginner illustrators (The ten commandments for freelance illustrators) I gave you some tips to order your head , and this week I would like to complete this information with some practical recommendations to show you how this works. I bring you a LOT of information today, so keep calm, in my upcoming posts I will go deeper in details to talk about the most useful topics.
En el post anterior de Kung-fu para ilustradores novatos (Los diez mandamientos del ilustrador freelance) dediqué una buena parte a daros recomendaciones para amueblar vuestro coco de ilustradores, y ésta semana quisiera completar toda esa información con algunas recomendaciones prácticas para que vayáis haciéndoos a la idea de cómo funciona. Es MUCHA la información que os tengo que dar hoy, así que tranquilos, en sucesivos posts profundizaré y me extenderé algo más sobre los temas más relevantes.
Where is the nord? Nine advices to start from somewhere.
¿Dónde está el norte? Nueve consejos para empezar por alguna parte.
- Show your work to the world! Create an on-line portfolio and fill it with the works that you would like to do in the near future and show it to the world through social media. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfect, you have to start from somewhere, after that you will be able to improve it later.
¡Muestra tus trabajos al mundo! Crea un portfolio, llénalo del tipo de trabajos que te gustaría hacer en el futuro y muévelo por las redes. No te preocupes si al principio no es perfecto, con el tiempo lo podrás ir mejorando. - Please, DON’T work for free. If your clients can’t pay you for your job keep it for later when they are capable to pay you for it or try to find an equitative way to do a work for work exchange.
As the Joker says in Batman’s film: «If you are good at something, don’t do it for free».
Your work has to be paid, keep in mind that if it didn’t require those specific skills and knowledge you have, everyone would be able to do it; you are investing your time and knowledge to do a work that will report some benefits to the client who is asking you to do it «because you do it so fast… it’s a scribble for you!» please, don’t be naive and fix a price for the work you do. (Another day I will go deeper in this point to give you better instructions about this topic.)
No trabajes gratis. Si no te pueden pagar el trabajo, aplaza el encargo para otro momento en el que sí lo hagan o procura intercambios equitativos.
Como decía el Joker en Batman: “Si algo se te da bien, no lo hagas gratis”.
El trabajo se paga, si tu trabajo no precisase de una formación determinada y unas habilidades muy específicas lo haría todo el mundo; ten en cuenta que cuando alguien te encarga “un dibujito que haces tú así en nada” estás invirtiendo tu tiempo en algo que reportará beneficios a quien te lo pide, no seas ingenuo/a y pon precio a lo que haces. Otro día profundizaré en éste punto concreto para daros unas pautas algo más exactas sobre el tema. - Don’t answer your client’s e-mails during the late night. (Unless it is SUPER important or you are planning to program the automatic sending for the early morning.
As I said previously, organization is going to become your best friend, and that means that you will have to determine the time for each thing and differ between urgency and importance.
No contestes e-mails de clientes a horas intempestivas. (A no ser que sean MUY importantes o que los programes para que se envíen por la mañana a primera hora.)
Como dije anteriormente, la organización va a ser tu mejor amiga, y eso implica determinar un tiempo para cada cosa y aprender a diferenciar entre lo importante y lo urgente. - Redact a good briefing for each commission and try to keep all the details written.
This is a basic point, if you have coursed an illustration degree or some design courses probably you know how to do it. (If you haven’t, don’t worry, I will show you soon how to do it in this blog) The Briefing is an inform developed between the professional artist and his or her client where they verify the details of what they need, to go ahead with the work.
Redacta un buen briefing para cada encargo y procura llevar todo por escrito.
Éste punto es básico, si has recibido formación académica sobre ilustración habrás aprendido cómo se hace. (Si no, tranquilo/a, próximamente os lo explicaré en el blog.). El briefing es un informe contrastado con el cliente que reúne detalles acerca del encargo, coteja esos detalles con tu cliente para verificar los datos y poder seguir adelante. - Practice everyday to build a healthy working habit.
As my masters were saying, this work has to be learned through trials and mistakes. Artistical education can help you to learn more quickly, but the rest is up to you; if you want to become a great artist, you will have to practice frequently to keep your mind creative and in shape. You can do some on-line drawing challenges or create your own illustration projects based in topics that you are really passionate about. The thing is to keep yourself drawing as a routine.
Practica todos los días para construir un hábito de trabajo saludable.
Como decían mis maestros, éste trabajo se aprende a base de ensayo y el error. La educación artística en las escuelas acorta un poco el camino, pero el resto es cosa de cada uno/a; si quieres convertirte en un/a gran artista tendrás que practicar con frecuencia para mantenerte creativo/a y en forma. Puedes hacer retos de dibujo que hay en internet como Inktober, Dinovember, buscar “dailydrawing lists”, elaborar proyectos ilustrados sobre temas que te apasionen… en definitiva, busca cualquier excusa para mantenerte dibujando. - Take pen and paper and bring with you a journal to write down your ideas. Ideas go on their own way, they are free and they can come at any time, but the most of the time they come after you start to work. You have to be prepared to receive them, to take note of them and to sculpt them.
Toma papel y boli, lleva encima una libreta donde anotar tus ideas. Las ideas vuelan, aparecen cuando menos te lo esperas, pero la mayoría de veces se presentan tras ponerte a trabajar. Has de estar listo para recibirlas, anotarlas y darles forma. - Start with an end in mind. Think in the goals you want to achieve, write it in detail and after that think about how should be the kind of person who achieve the goals you want. Take notes with your own hands about how this person should be and describe what would he or she do to make this goals come true, which habits and passions would they have, which actions might they take and as soon as you can read this in your paper, you will have written the recipe to go closer to the life you want to achieve.
Comienza con un fin en mente. Piensa en aquello que quieres lograr, anótalo con el máximo de detalles posible y después reflexiona sobre cómo sería el tipo de persona que lograría aquello que quieres, anota con tu puño y letra cómo sería esa persona y no seas parco en detalles, describe qué haría esa persona para vivir así, cuáles serían sus hábitos y pasiones, qué acciones llevaría a cabo. Cuando lo tengas todo, habrás escrito la receta para acercarte más a la vida que deseas. - If you have already learnt the basics of drawing and all you need is to start, the moment to start is now. Those fear feelings will come with you along the road; stop procrastinating expecting to be «enough prepared» and don’t compare yourself to other people in a negative way looking to be perfect, nobody is free to make mistakes.
Si ya te has formado y lo que te falta es rodaje, el momento para empezar es ahora. Deja de postergar los acontecimientos por miedo, no esperes a estar lo “suficientemente” preparado, no te compares con otros de forma negativa ni busques la perfección, nadie está libre de errores. Es más valioso un trabajo imperfecto acabado que uno perfecto inacabado. - At last but not least important… be patient, have faith and have fun! We usually think in our goals as a full point, but we don’t consider the process, uncertainty or the natural time of the things… sometimes (when all you can do is done) you just need to be patient! This things you can’t control also take part in the spectacle. Have faith in what you do, because this is a process, and this will be equally hard and satisfying.
Por último y no menos importante… ¡ten paciencia, ten fe y pásatelo bien! Solemos pensar en el fin de las cosas, pero no tenemos en cuenta el durante, los tiempos de espera, la incertidumbre… todo eso que no podemos controlar también forma parte del espectáculo. Ten fe en lo que haces, porque lo que éste proceso tiene de duro lo tendrá de gratificante.
